Avionica announced the release of its Iridium Portal product source code to the aviation community. The announcement was well-received by the community, including OEMs and operators. In its present state, the Iridium satellite system cannot accept pre- emptive Air Traffic Control calls to the cockpit. Avionica's Iridium Portal technology provides this capability. The Iridium system is also SIM-card based, requiring that airline operators either exchange SIM cards when equipment is replaced, or provision more costly, failure-prone, remotely mounted SIM- card holders in the aircraft.
