    JDSU introduced the ONT-503, a compact 40/43G tester that combines lab testing needs with a portable form factor. The versatile ONT-503 allows for full test automation in the lab as well as portability that requires no additional equipment. The ONT-503, a test solution based on the JDSU ONT-506, weighs less than 15kg when fully equipped for 40/43G and meets demanding research, development and service verification testing needs.

    The new tester will be introduced at the Nature Photonics Technology Conference in Tokyo, October 23-25.
The JDSU ONT-503 draws most of its features from the ONT-506, including software, CPU, a 15 inch touch screen, and an integrated clock module. ONT- 503 modules and ONT-506/-512 modules are interchangeable for greater user flexibility across platforms.

    The ONT-503 is ideal for users who share resources and need to use one test instrument across different departments
and sites, such as engineers who normally use 40/43G test instruments in the lab but also need them for highly-sophisticated certification measurements at customer sites (reusing known procedures). The product is also ideal for rental companies that do not want to cover all applications in one mainframe and those who require a compact test instrument for jitter testing at 10/10.7G and 2.5/2.7G.

    "Consumer and business demand for broadband services has prompted operators to increase investment in 40G
to expand the capacity of their networks," said Bernhard Mueller, general manager for JDSU's optical transport Test and Measurement group. "With the addition of the ONT-503, JDSU has an unmatched set of solutions designed to help the market meet the challenges associated with the development, production and operation of 40G networks."

    Powerful technical highlights include a multichannel application that allows sophisticated trouble shooting;
4 port Ethernet testing up to 1GbE; SDH/SONET up to 2.5G 1310/1550nm; Unframed signals from 9.95G - 11.3G; 10GbE LAN Phys and MAC; 10GbE WAN Phys and MAC; and 10GbE LAN OTN. The ONT-503 includes the industry's most compact and accurate jitter solution at 2.5/2.7G as well as 10/10.7G.

    The ONT platform is a multi-functional, multi-port and multi-user solution for fast and flexible testing of optical network environments.
The ONT is designed to address the optical and digital testing needs in R&D, SVT and troubleshooting. JDSU offers a choice of ONT platforms covering rack- mountable and portable mainframes, and a range of plug-in instrument modules for SONET/SDH, DSn/PDH, new SONET/SDH, OTN, EoS, Ethernet and DWDM, controlled via an intuitive user interface.
