Sierra Wireless and LANCOM Systems announced that LANCOM has selected the Sierra Wireless MC8780 embedded module to provide mobile broadband connectivity for the LANCOM 1751 UMTS router. The LANCOM 1751 UMTS and LANCOM 3850 UMTS routers provide a flexible option for internet access, or when used with the VPN, secure access to corporate networks from temporary or mobile work locations, such as construction sites or trade show conference rooms.

They include an integrated firewall with the latest security functions such as stateful inspection, intrusion detection,
and denial-of-service protection, as well as dynamic bandwidth management and backup and redundancy functionality, to provide a secure environment for enterprise communication. A business VPN router with integrated UMTS and ADSL2+ modems, the LANCOM 1751 UMTS router utilizes the integrated Sierra Wireless module to offer HSxPA network access at peak data speeds of up to 7.2 megabits per second on the downlink and up to 2.0 Mbps on the uplink.

"We were particularly impressed with the performance and versatility of the Sierra Wireless UMTS modules.
Our UMTS routers benefit largely from their early HSUPA support plus the integrated GPS functionality; allowing unprecedented speeds, plus unique features such as an integrated, GPS-based anti-theft protection. The Sierra Wireless modules, therefore, fit perfectly into our overall product strategy, which sees UMTS as the upcoming standard in enterprise site-to-site and Internet connectivity," according to Christian Schallenberg, Executive Vice President Product Marketing, LANCOM.

The LANCOM 1751 UMTS router with the Sierra Wireless embedded module, as well as the LANCOM 3850 UMTS router,
a professional UMTS/WLAN router that offers mobile broadband connectivity via a PC card, ExpressCard or a USB modem, are on display this week in the Sierra Wireless pavilion (AV99, on the Avenue) at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Jim Lahey, Vice President, EMEA for Sierra Wireless notes:
"Mobile broadband offers a viable connectivity alternative for enterprise customers who need to get network connections up and running quickly, or as a backup for wired connections in mission critical applications. In this type of application, the performance and reliability of any connectivity solution is paramount, and so we're very pleased with LANCOM's selection of Sierra Wireless to deliver mobile broadband connectivity to its business router."
