Wassim Melhem was hired by Embarcadero Technologies to help lead its Eclipse technology and product efforts. Melhem, beeing most recently with the IBM Toronto laboratory, joins Embarcadero in a program manager role.

As the company's newest program manager, Wassim Melhem will contribute to Embarcadero Technologies' Eclipse-based product development  efforts.

As a committer and an advisor on the Eclipse Plug-in Development Environment (PDE), Melhem will oversee Embarcadero's latest Eclipse-based product, PowerSQL, a professional-grade SQL development tool. PowerSQL is designed specifically for application developers and will be unveiled at EclipseCon 2008. A PowerSQL public beta is available at: http://www.embarcadero.com/powersqlbeta/.

Melhem said: "Embarcadero PowerSQL brings to the application developers the productivity features they have long been wishing for in a database IDE. To be leading such an exciting new product was an opportunity I could not pass up", "Eclipse was chosen as the platform for PowerSQL for its elegant plug-in architecture, powerful application frameworks and, of course, its vibrant community."

Melhem led the Eclipse PDE since the Eclipse 2.1 release through to the RCP renaissance and into the new age of OSGi runtimes. He also directed the design and implementation of the tools available in the Eclipse SDK to develop, test and deploy Eclipse plug-ins, rich client applications, features and update sites.

Melhem expanded the mandate of PDE to provide comprehensive OSGi tooling, making PDE an ideal development environment for component programming, not just Eclipse plug-in development.

Prior to joining Embarcadero, Melhem worked at the IBM Toronto laboratory for seven years where he managed the Eclipse PDE for four of those years (2003-2007). Melhem spent the early part of his career sequencing DNA and implementing XML and Java code-generating tools for the MQSeries family of runtimes. Melhem holds a bachelor's degree of mathematics with honors in computer science from the University of Waterloo.
